The roads of Lake Jackson have been topic of discussion in the community for many years.  Until recently,  all of the roads were owned by Lake Jackson Hills Inc., the company that was formed to develop the original lakeside community.

For many years the maintenance of the roads was more-or-less left up to the community homeowners.   In the early 90's, the Lake Jackson Sanitary District was formed to allow the county to collect taxes to pay for road maintenance. Currently, the tax rate for the Sanitary District is $0.13/$100.00 of assessed value.  This generates a yearly budget of approximately $120,000 for the maintenance of the roads.

The purpose of the Road Committee is to recommend how these funds are spent for road improvements, snow removal, etc.  The Committee meets on the third Monday of every month at the LJVFD Fire House at 7:30 p.m..  Lake Jackson taxpayers can attend the meetings to comment on the various proposals and raise issues. Road Committee meetings will be published on the Home page and appear in the community calendar.

The current Road Committee members are Scott Bishop,  Cecilia Galloway-Sheil; Mark Penaranda, and Ryan Paquet. The chairman position is currently vacant. Each member represents a specific area within the Sanitary District, and is responsible for reporting information pertaining to their area to the committee.  To see a map of the 6 road committee areas, click here.

To leave a message for the road committee you can call (703) 792-7480.  You can also email the committee at roads@lakejacksonva.com and someone will get back to you.  In your email, please be sure to include a specific location and description of the area you are writing about.  If possible, also include the road committee area it is in (see the map above) so that your comment can be directed to the appropriate committee member.

One of the primary issue surrounding our roads is whether they should remain as they are (mostly gravel), or be "tarred and chipped" (a process of laying down a layer of tar and stone chips to form a more durable surface).  Some of the major roads in the area have already been tarred and chipped.  The argument for leaving the roads as they are is that it retains the "rural ambiance" of the lake and discourages over-development.  The counter argument is that the current gravel roads can not be adequately maintained and are often nearly impassable due to washouts, potholes, etc. and that better roads would increase property values.  You are encouraged to express your opinions on the subject in the "Community Issues"  section of the message board.
